We are excited to announce a new partnership between Medefer and Independent Health Group to offer a local anaesthetic hernia service for patients in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. We have already successfully supported patients in the area.
How it works
Independent Health Group provides NHS treatment for hernia surgery under local anaesthetic and has carried out almost 9,000 procedures nationally:
- Initial Assessment: Patients are assessed to determine if surgery is needed and if it can be performed under local anaesthetic.
- Suitability: If suitable, patients will proceed with surgery under local anaesthetic. If not suitable, they require a general anaesthetic, or are unable to travel to our surgical centre, we will arrange an onward referral to the local Trust of the patient’s preference.

- Initial assessment clinic: Delivered at Castle Medical Group, Ashby de la Zouch (approximately 11 miles from Burton upon Trent, 33 miles from Stafford, and 43 miles from Stoke-on-Trent)
- Local anaesthetic surgery centre: Syston Health Centre, Leicester (approximately 35 miles from Burton upon Trent, 50 miles from Stafford, 50 miles from Stoke-on-Trent, and 60 miles from Stafford)

How to refer
You can refer to Medefer’s General Surgical services on eRS in the usual way, Medefer will carry out an initial assessment within 48 hours and support patients with the choice to be assessed by the Independent Health Group.
