Prof. Richard Newsom
BSc(Hons), MBBS, MD, FRCOphth
Prof Newsom qualified in medicine from the University of London in 1986. His training in Ophthalmology, including advanced specialist training in cataract, medical and vitreoretinal surgery was undertaken at St Tomas’s and the Moorfields Eye Hospital London and the New England Eye Centre USA. He has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon since 2001 and is currently the Clinical Lead at St Mary’s Treatment Centre Portsmouth.
Selected Career Highlights
Prof Newsom has published over 70 peer reviewed scientific papers and has lectured internationally as a guest speaker. Research interests include cataract surgery, retinal surgery and macular degeneration.
Winner of Ophthalmic research prizes with over £1m in research grants.
Performs approximately 1,300 procedures per year
Works with Mercy Ships in West Africa.
